This report provides the result of Battelle's program to develop an experimental electronic sensor/actuator sprinkler head for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (F E M A).
Besides Battelle's primary goal of designing and prooftesting an experimental prototype low-cost electronic sensor/actuator for a residential automatic sprinkler head, a secondary goal is to provide understanding, guidance, and technical assistance to the U. S. sprinkler industry.
It is anticipated that the latter will result in accelerated development and application of electronic, quick reaction sprinkler head sensors/actuators for residential, commercial and industrial use.
The program did not include the design or specification for layout of entire sprinkler systems, or the development, testing, and fabrication of sprinkler heads or other system components for individual members of the sprinkler industry.
Four specific tasks were planned to meet the program objective, and they are listed below:
Task I Study of Foreign Research
Task II Development of an Electronic Automatic Sprinkler
Task III Performance Characterization of the Battelle-Developed Prototype
Task IV Information Dissemination and Technical Assistance to the Sprinkler Industry.
This report contains a detailed description of the work performed and results obtained for each of the above tasks.
