Eight years ago the Fire Commission (W14) of CIB sponsored a Symposium on Smoke Control in Building Fires. Work continues in many countries and there are now several acceptable systems available, each appropriate for certain kinds of building. No one system is suitable for all types of building. CIB W14 is anxious to encourage their wider use and the resolution of certain technical problems and accordingly a group from W14 under the convenor ship of Mme NN of CSTB has prepared this review which is issued with W14 approval. It is to be hoped that wider adoption of reliable systems will reduce the hazards from smoke and combustion products which represent a very serious threat from fires in buildings and at the sametime allow the architect greater design flexibility.(P.
