Long-range idenfication of five vehicles was studied in a laboratory experiment.
Silhouette pictures, with high contrast, were viewed at scaled ranges from 3000 to 7200 meters. Eleven subjects made 160 observations each. For all vehicles the mean rate of correct identifications was over 50 procent up to 5000 meters. At longer ranges the differences in performance between the vehicles were increasing and there was a significant interaction between vehicle and range. At ranges over 5000 meters there was a clear tendency to underestimate the target size.
It was concluded that the composition of the target array is of great importance for the identification performance, and methodological implications of this were discussed.
This report is a revised version of FOA report C56019-H6, 1979, "Identifiering av fordonssiluetter som funktion av observationsavståndet".
