A number of benchmark examples have been suggested for verification of two dimensional temperature calculation computer codes based on the finite element or finite differrence methods. First a simple example is suggested where an analytical solution is available then more complex cases are introduced assuming non linear boundary conditions and material properties varying with temperature. Finally, cases dominated by heat transferred by radiation in internal voids are defined. Solutions of all the suggsted examples are given in an appendix where various numbers of elements have been used for the numerical modelling. The intention is that specialists offering similar computer codes, particularly for fire safety engineers, should carry out similar calculations. Such comparataive calculations could then form a basis for discussions on accuracy etc of various codes. The intention of this scheme is to evaluate computer codes with given input data. Therefore no comparisions are made with test results.
