This report highlights some of the major findings of the 1972 nationwide study of 86 Americans, 18 years of age and older. The field work was conducted in February and March 1972. The report reflects upon the global context as it was seen in the early months of 1972, outlines the main features of national thinking about civil defense, and draws some police relevant conclusions on the basis of the reported results. Among some of the specific topics covered are: world tensions, war, Soviet and American strength, shelters and shelter warning device, colunteering for civil defense, and cost. Incorporating private home basements into a national shelter system, distributing a home warning device, and increasing civil defense participation through a call for volunteers are further discussed in the conclusions.
