The statistics of fires attended by fire brigades are being currently used to measure the chance of a fire spreading beyond the room of origin. This paper provides some evidence that this may depend on how the fire was ignited. The proportion spreading beyond the room of origin when the fire is reported as being started by malicious or intentional ignition from other causes.
