In Europe tank shells and their fastenings are dimensioned and approved in accordance with the European Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road.. The dynamic properties of the loaded vehicle caused by irregularities in the road surface are however not taken into account in the technical rules. Measurements have been performed on the shell of a tank vehicle carrying liquid, on different road types, and with different liquid level in the tanks. Two different methods were used to analyse the measurement results. To dimension against separate dynamic overloads a shock response spectrum analysis was performed. A new model for fatigue life has been utilized to facilitate this analysis. The result show that the risk of damage caused by fatigue is between 7 to 10 times higher when driving on a secondary road compared to driving on a motorway.
