This document summarises the findings of a three year research project on escape behaviour in fires conducted between 1985 -1988. The findings are reported in greater detail in five research reports which were submitted at regular intervals to the Home Office during the cource of the project. As a Management Summary of research findings, and for the sake of clarity, the actual staistical analyses and many of the details of the studies have not been set out in this report. The leader is referred to the actual research reports themselves. It should also be emphasised that the research has intentionally focused on a series of highly detailed case studies, rather than attempting to make broad generalisations based on a questionnaire survey of a large number of fires.
