Ultraviolet (UV) detectors are often pointed vertically toward the protected area. When this is done, the resultant circular coverage area is maximized by placing the sensor at an elevation close to its optical range. In practice, however, considerations such as availability of supports and maintenance operations impose a reduced elevation with the consequent loss in coverage area. This paper shows that, if the sensor is obliquely pointed, a larger, elliptical coverage area is attained at reduced elevations. It is formally demonstrated that oblique orientation increases coverage area in all cases. A general equation for computing the area gain is provided. In addition, a graphic technique that assures full coverage with minimum number of detectors is offered to the practicing engineer.
