ABSTRACT By applying the principles of classical mechanics to approximations of aerodynamic and ground interaction forces, a general three-dimensional debris fragment transport code, DEBRIS, has been written. Certain field experiments have been simulated using airblast originating in large H E explosions and the simulated and experimental outcomes have been compared. Although simulation of long-distance or high-speed transport by tumbling or sliding over ground surfaces is not satisfactory, shortdistance transport, such as might be found following structural collapse, is sufficiently realistic to enable DEBRIS and a previously developed building response code, BRACOB, to be ultimately capable of describing outside wall debris patterns. It is recommended that velocity-dependent loss mechanisms be incorporated in DEBRIS to improve its simulation of long-distance transport and that certain existing uncertainties concerning wall debris creation and transport be lessened by means of a full-size or near fullsize field experiment.
