This paper discusses the principles of smoke control and the pracical application of these principles to zoned smoke control systems. Zoned smoke control can use dedicated fans or the fans of a building's heating, ventilating and conditioning (HVAC) systems. Application of HVAC systems that serve one or many smoke control zones are discussed. The paper discusses concerns with systems that only purge in an attempt to control smoke movement. Considerations of system activation and acceptance testing are presented.
