In assessing the fire risk of one or more specific products, fire incidence statistics provide an important base line measure of the extent of fire losses, and of the principal causative factors, including sources of ignition and the effects of occupancy and fire protective measures. Normalization the incidence data in terms of the exposure time, the available exposed area of the product, and the number of persons at risk may permit more meaningful comparisons to be made. Analysis of the likely fire scenarios leading from ignition to an ultimate injury or loss provides insight into the fire response factors important in laboratory evaluation of a product. Conversion and weighting factors may be used to combine the fire response test results in proportion to their relative importance.
