This volume evolved from a workshop entitled "Social Construction of Risk and Safety" that took place in southern Sweden in March 2000. The purpose of the workshop was to bring together social scientists from various disciplines to discuss theoretical and empirical work on how risks are defined and handled at everyday sites of technological practice. The workshop, which was organized by the Department of Technology and Social Change at Linköping University, attracted over thirty invited participants from seven countries.
