Abstract The report describes the development of a computer-based technique for analysing the spread of fire through a multi-compartment building, and quantifies the effectiveness of a building's fire safety performance in terms of a cost index and a safety index. The technique is a comparative tool for the evaluation of alternative fire protection strategies. The application of the technique to a four-storey office building is described, and the effects of varying a number of parameters are illustrated.
