This report contains recommendations for the location, configuration, and orientation of entrances to blast-slanted basement shelters. These recommendations are to be used in conjunction with blast-slanted shelter design to limit those airblast-phenomena most likely to cause personnel casualties. It was established that of human damage; blast overpressure would not be a primary hazard. Curves for the inflow velocity into the chamber as a function of pressure on the exterior of the chamber were presented. Wave motions surrounding the entry and exit of a shock wave in a tunnel-type entry were summarized.
A two-dimensional hydrodynamic code was used to evaluate a series of chambers of different geometries. The computer output from the numerical simulation is presented for the full range of cases to give the architect and engineer an intuitive feel for the flow environment within shelters. Close agreement was noted between the analysis, the numerical simulation, and the limited available experimental data. High-velocity inflows were found to establish signigicant circulatory flow fields, sufficiently intense to cause human damage. Several possible ways to reduce or redirect the inflow or circulatory flow were examined.
