The U.S. grain stocks, which represent approximately 70% of the total U.S. stored food, have dropped rather steadily for seven years. In spite of this decrease, present total stocks seen ample to bridge a post-nuclear attack food gap until production rates reach consumption rates, although difficult emergency transportation problems must be solved.
Livestock is particularly vulnerable to fallout radiation. A sample survey has indicated that only low protection factors (-2) are available in Tennessee for livestock.
Nevertheless, based in the fallout pattern from a heavy attack against the U.S., it appears that even low protection factors may be extremely useful for livestock. Examples are given of inexpensive ways to provide P.Fs of 3-5.
