On September 29, 1989 an engine, Wagon 7, of the Catlett (Virginia) Volunteer Fire Department was struck by an Amtrak passenger train while crossing a private grade crossing in a rural area The engine was responding to a vehicle fire and was in sight of smoke from the burning vehicle when the accident occurred. Two of the five firefighters on the engine were killed, the other three were injured -- two seriously. Of the 399 passengers and crew on the Amtrak train, 57 were injured, with minor to moderate injuries, including the entire train crew.
